After 35 Years of Writing Songs for Others, the Walkers Are Closing Their Studio

We get sent a lot of stories. But every now and then, one stands out.
Earlier this year, a reader messaged us with a link:
“You should look into these people — it’s something really special.”
They were talking about Walker’s Songs.
A small, family-run studio based in Cheyenne, Wyoming, where a dad, mom, son, and daughter have spent the last 35 years writing personal songs — from scratch — based on real stories from people all over the world.
What kind of songs?
All kinds.
Songs for 50th wedding anniversaries. For people who just lost someone. For kids leaving for college. For couples celebrating their first date.
Each one based on a short questionnaire.
Each one written and recorded by one of the Walkers.
“We’ve written songs for people who’ve been together 40 years, and for people who just got engaged last week,” says Emma Walker, the daughter.
“We’ve written goodbye songs, proposal songs, thank-you songs, and even a few inside-joke songs that had us cracking up in the studio.”

Naturally, we wanted to see what it was like.
So we sent in a story — a simple one, about two best friends who live on opposite sides of the country and only see each other once a year
Filling out the form on their website took just a few minutes.

No one in our team expected to get emotional.
But there we were, quietly listening around a laptop.
It wasn’t just clever.
It felt genuinely personal — like someone had reached into the heart of the story and put it to music

The songs are made entirely in-house, by:
James Walker (dad) – country & acoustic ballads
Diane Walker (mom) – jazz & soul
Emma Walker (daughter) – modern pop & R&B
Lucas Walker (son) – indie, soft pop, jazz
Each brings their own sound.
Each listens to your story, then writes lyrics, melody and vocals from scratch.
And no — they don’t use AI.
“That’s exactly why we’re stopping,” says James. “AI can write lyrics now. It can mimic voices. But it can’t feel the story the way a human does. We wanted to go out while it still mattered.”

“taking a mix match series of events, that simply had no easy way to be shared. I had carried a weight in my soul for 5 years. Oh there were some popular songs that tickled it, but none really fit. Walkers made it fit, but there when i downloaded it, there was a difference in the printed version, and the musical one. Walker immediately rectified it, and the final version was just what i needed to say. “The song was absolutely AMAZING! I listened to it at least 20 times in a row. I was incredulous as to how amazing it was.
I love the quick communication with this family. Originally, I selected a female to sing the song. But when it was written from a male perspective, the Walker family worked with me to change the vocals to a male singer instead. This family is very responsive and helpful”
